Gravity’s not just a good idea…it’s the law

In the Q&A at the end of this episode of Akimbo, Seth Godin explains that to misses the point. It is not about improving all the aspects of Patreon, rather it is about building up our permission base.

Platforms cost money, and obviously someone has to pay for it at some point. I just wish that didnโt lead to the never-ending treadmill effect of profitability over all else.
So, the trickle of income from Patreon feels nice, but I donโt want to self-promote more than I already am. Mediumโs paywall is a promising income stream, but I risk losing the audience I care most about. So far it feels like publishing on LeanPub hits the sweet spot between revenue and ethics. So Iโm considering that my next experiment could be to package up my existing blog posts into a kind of โbest ofโ ebook that people can buy if they want to support my writing.
I have been wondering a lot lately about Patreon and the move to closed services. Richard Bartlett reflects on his experiences and compares the different options available. Interestingly, he concluded with Leadpub and the packaging up of content to sell. This reminds me of what Audrey Watters’ does with her presentations. Personally, I would rather pay for a product, rather than a subscription.

I find this move to Patreon interesting. I have unpacked it elsewhere. I am wondering about the impact that this has on the open web? Am I allowed to share something that is for a privileged audience?
