๐Ÿค” Newsletters should be letters!

People often ask me for advice on how to write a newsletter. I usually tell them some variation of what I wrote in Steal Like an Artist: โ€œWrite a newsletter youโ€™d like to read.โ€ย

I have a few more tips, like โ€œPick a repeatable formatโ€ or โ€œBe consistent at a regular frequency.โ€

But my current personal motto is: โ€œNewsletters should be letters.โ€

What I love most about newsletters is the letter part โ€” the epistle, the missive, the bulletin, the dispatch! Whatโ€™s going on โ€” in the studio, in my life, in my mind โ€” thatโ€™s worth sending out? Worth opening? Worth reading?

I have been wondering about why I fell out of love with the slight obsession I had with my newsletter, I think it was because it may have become a letter to no one in particular. I feel that a ‘letter’ has an ideal reader in mind, maybe?
